Addis Ababa – Jinka – Ari Villages
Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka. Upon arrival, meet the local team and check in to your hotel. Later, visit villages of the Ari tribe, surrounded by lush countryside that contrasts beautifully with other parts of the Omo Valley. Walk through farmlands, visit local homes, meet craftsmen, and learn how the Ari people live. If the timing matches, you may also visit a local market.
- 2
Jinka – Mago National Park – Mursi Village – Turmi
Drive through Mago National Park to visit the Mursi people, one of the most iconic communities of the Omo Valley. The Mursi are known for their strong cultural identity and the large lip plates traditionally worn by women. Walk around the village, visit family huts, learn about their daily life, and take photographs with the community members where permitted. After the visit, drive to Turmi, the main settlement of the Hamer people. The Hamer are known for their hairstyles, cattle-based lifestyle, and the bull-jumping ceremony, an important rite of passage for young men.
- 3
Turmi – Omorate – Dasenech Village – Turmi
In the morning, drive to Omorate to visit the Dasenech tribe, who live around the Omo River near the Kenyan border. Cross the river by traditional boat to reach their village and learn about their mobile lifestyle, cattle culture, and adaptation to the dry environment. The Dasenech rely heavily on livestock during dry seasons, and cattle and goats remain important for food, status, and marriage traditions. In the afternoon, return to Turmi. If it is Monday, visit the tribal market in Turmi.
- 4
Turmi – Korcho – Karo Tribe – Hamer Village – Turmi
Drive to Korcho, a Karo village beautifully located on a cliff overlooking the Omo River. The Karo people live in traditional huts and are widely known for their artistic body painting using colorful clay soil. After visiting Korcho, return to the Turmi area. Walk through a Hamer village and, if possible, join a local family for traditional coffee. Depending on the day, you may also visit the local market in Turmi, where different communities gather to buy and sell goods.
- 5
Turmi – Konso – Arba Minch
After breakfast, drive to Arba Minch via Konso. Visit a Konso hilltop village, fortified by several rounds of stone walls. The Konso are known for their impressive soil conservation, terraced farming, and traditional village structure. Konso is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the narrow village paths and learn about the community’s architecture, culture, and defensive village layout before continuing to Arba Minch.
- 6
Arba Minch – Dorze – Hawassa
In the morning, drive to Dorze village, famous for handmade cotton weaving and traditional “Shemane” weaving. See how Dorze weavers produce clothing used for celebrations, weddings, funerals, and special occasions. Walk through green farmlands, visit the Dorze elephant-shaped houses, learn how food is made from the false banana tree, and enjoy local music and dance. Afterward, continue to Hawassa, a pleasant lakeside city. Visit the fish market, see pelicans, marabou storks, and other water birds, and take a boat ride to view hippos.
- 7
Hawassa – Bale Mountains National Park
In the morning, drive to Bale Mountains National Park, one of Ethiopia’s most important wildlife and highland ecosystems. The area is home to Ethiopia’s second-highest mountain and remarkable Afro-alpine scenery. On the Sanetti Plateau, search for the rare Ethiopian wolf and giant mole rat while enjoying wide views of the mountain landscape.
- 8
Dinsho Forest – Addis Ababa
Early in the morning, explore Dinsho Forest, dominated by Juniper and Hagenia Abyssinica trees. Look for wildlife such as Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, antelopes, warthogs, and monkeys.
